I know what you might be thinking; Breast pads as if having a baby isn't a lot already. Well momma I've been there I've done that and now that its World Breastfeeding week celebrations I though why not express my experience.

In middle school there was a project done in health class where the goal was to find how much it cost to have a baby. I thought it was very expensive so I started cutting things from my list. And funny enough breast pads was one. I had a teacher look over my list and she said oh no you need those trust me. The milk will spill everywhere if you don't. I thought she was exaggerating… until it happened to me.

I was able to get these reusable breast pads. Yes I was conscious of my footprint. I didn't want disposables because I didn't know how they would make my milk taste. FYI there was no difference, now I didn't taste the milk but my baby likes and drank milk the same. One thing I would recommend having is a bag to wash the breast pads in. They have a storage bag after the wash that was very nice to keep them all in one place . The washer machine did give them a good clean I never had to hand wash these breast pads. BTW I placed them in the wash with my baby's clothes. The pads need to be washed very soon after use and changed daily, obviously. They start to smell like sour milk after the second day. This is normal milk is milk it goes sour.

Pros

These breast pads are very absorbent; at times they got very heavy and no leaks. I would recommend getting assorted colors breast pads so that you can keep track of wash times so you won’t run out. There are plenty of them to wear one day of the week. They are so soft; I would hardly feel them on. The material is sustainable and very durable; I washed many times and they looked good as new.

Now here is what happened with .... Reusables

Reusable

Okay I will admit it. I started off motherhood with wanting reusable breast pads. I thought to myself I'll just stick to them and it'll be great. Who knows what can be on those things. And then …

We went traveling to the country side. Specifically we went camping at a beautiful and wooded forest. I love nature so I was in a state of peace and relaxation but there was no running water. So I decided to give the reusables a break while I was on holiday. I didn't have to worry about washing them or taking too long to change them between activities and smelling like sour milk and sweat.

Yes the reusable pads can just be put in the dirty pile but another advantage to the disposables is you simply throw them away. I don't know about y'all but after a long trip once you get back home it's laundry GALORE! I've honestly considered going to a washateria, on a slow day, and loading all the washers to get laundry done in a few hours vs. days!

So in summary they both have their pros and cons. I like to think about the days before there were such things as disposables and what would my ancestors do? I am very grateful for this. Now that we have convenience, something I ask myself: could there be conveniences in nature? Let me know what you think in the comment section.
