Confessions of a Mom: The Unconventional Way I Taught My Child to Love Brushing Their Teeth

As a mom, witnessing the daily struggle of brushing teeth can feel like an epic battle. From the crying to the resistance, brushing teeth often transforms into a chore rather than a joyful routine. But what if I told you there’s a way to turn this mundane task into a fun and engaging experience for both you and your little one? Here’s my unconventional journey of how I taught my child to brush with enthusiasm!

The Power of Play while brushing teeth

When I first introduced the idea of brushing teeth to my toddler, I quickly realized it wouldn’t be easy. The toothbrush looked more like a toy they didn't want to associate with cleanliness. So, I changed my approach: I started by exposing the idea of toothbrushing through songs on YouTube and from myself while I brushed to my child.

As I sang, I made facial expressions and dances to make the brushing more engaging. I used the brightly colored toothbrush as well this was, I noticed my child was looking at the brush as I used it. Once interest was gone, I would wave it around and eventually the motions would catch my child's attention.

The song made all the difference. My child eagerly picked up the toothbrush each morning and night and really wanted to brush even throughout the day to sing along together and brush our teeth.

Create a Brushing Routine

Consistency is key, especially with children. Establishing a brushing routine helped my little one know what to expect. We decided we'd brush after breakfast and before bed, turning it into a scheduled part of our day.

To keep things exciting, I made sure and made brushing fun engaging and playful... even when my child bit the toothbrush; this was just the silly side, and we had fun with it.

The predictability of the routine coupled with a interactive activity we did together helped instill a sense of responsibility and excitement surrounding dental hygiene.

Make it Musical

I used songs from YouTube however it can be any song. Make one would be a fun activity to have with the children as well, just make it catchy and fun.

This turned brushing into a dance party! Not only was it fun, but it also encouraged my child to brush longer while we jammed out together.

Lead by Example

Young children love to mimic their parents, so I knew if I could demonstrate enthusiasm and proper techniques, they would likely follow suit. I made it a point to brush my teeth alongside my child, providing a hands-on learning experience.

Moreover, I made sure to discuss why we brush teeth. I explained, in simple terms, that brushing helps to keep the mouth healthy and fights off those pesky cavities. My child began to understand the reasons behind the routine and, believe it or not, started to feel pride in taking care of their own teeth.

Choose Fun Dental Products Together

Shopping for toothbrushes and toothpaste became a special adventure for us. I allowed my child to choose their own toothbrush—with their favorite cartoon character, of course—I haven't graduated my child to toothpaste because we are in the process of understanding the spit it out concept. How did you teach your children to spit out the toothpaste?

Personalized items sparked their interest in brushing their teeth. Having a toothbrush that reflected their personality made the process feel more special, and they were more excited to use it.

Positive Reinforcement while Brushing Teeth

Praise goes a long way, especially for little ones. After every successful brushing session, I always made it a point to celebrate. Whether it was high-fives or a laugh together, a smile, or verbal affirmations like “great job cleaning those teeth!” my child appreciated the validation.

Keeping It Fun With Friends or family

For a time, I was taking care of a little cousin and would use the same technique to encourage dental hygiene and so with time it was a "Brushing Party." We engaged in activities like brushing our toys' teeth.

This communal experience made brushing feel less like a solitary task and more of a playful adventure with friends. Children love being part of a team and turning teeth brushing into a fun group activity can foster positive associations with oral care.

The Importance of Regular Dental Visits

As my child began to embrace the brush, I also made it a point to schedule dental visits. I would have my child with me in the dental office even before there were any teeth in the mouth, my dentist advised to get my child an appointment as soon as there were teeth in the mouth. My child seeing me at the dentist helped demystify the dentist's office and built positive experiences in my child’s mind regarding dental care.

Each visit included informative discussions about why brushing teeth is vital, supplemented by kid-friendly demonstrations. When they saw the dentist caring for their teeth, it reinforced our brushing routines at home.

Conclusion

Teaching a child to brush their teeth doesn’t have to be an exhausting task filled with tears and tantrums. By incorporating play, routine, and hands-on experiences, I transformed our daily brushing sessions into moments of joy.

As a result, my little adventurer now eagerly greets the toothbrush. Who knew that by embracing creativity and fun, we could nurture good dental habits that will last a lifetime?

So remember, the key to brushing our children’s teeth lies in appreciation, engagement, and most importantly—a little bit of fun!
